The world has dimmed with the passing of Vang Chai Thao, a revered Hmong shaman who not only dedicated his life to healing, guiding, and preserving the traditions of his culture but also left a lasting mark as a devoted family man. Vang Chai Thao peacefully transitioned from this world on August 25, 2023 at the age of 84 in Appleton, WI leaving behind a legacy that has touched the lives of countless individuals.
He was born on January 1, 1939, in the Village of Hou Vah Sha in Laos. Throughout his life, Vang Chai Thao tirelessly embraced his role as a bridge between the physical and spiritual realms, guiding those in need with wisdom, compassion, and a profound understanding of the energies that surround us. As a father, he instilled in his children the values of compassion, respect, and exemplified the importance of preserving cultural traditions.
Vang Chai Thao is survived by his wife Mai Thao and his sons and (daughter-in-law); Jua Neng (Mao Xiong), Leng (Mai Yia Lee), Ya Thao (Mai Lao Lee) Chee Nou (Kao Thao), Nou Blia (Sacy Vue), and Ger (Chor Yang). He is also survived by his daughters and (sons-in-law); Yang Thao, Kellie Her (Dang Her), Mai Nhia Thao (David Vue); and all his 50 grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is further survived by his brother, Leng Kao and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death are his parents Nyiaj Yig and Ntxhiav, daughter, Mai Lee, older brother Paja Thao, and three sisters Ya Mee, Joua, and Chue Mee.
Vang Chai Thao's departure leaves a profound void in the hearts of those who knew him. His dedication to his craft and his boundless love for his community will forever serve as a beacon of inspiration and his essence lives on in the memories, stories, and lives he touched.
A traditional Hmong memorial service to celebrate the life of Vang Chai Thao will be held from Friday, September 8, to Monday, September 11 at the Richmond Hall in Appleton, WI. Vang Chai’s final resting place will be at Riverside Cemetery and the ceremony will start at 11 AM on Monday, September 11, 2023.
