Paul J. Klemmer, age 98, passed away on November 28, 2023 at Touchmark in Appleton. Paul was born August 22, 1925 in Oshkosh, WI, son of the late John and Lorna (Wolff) Klemmer. Growing up around Sunset Point in Oshkosh, he fished, hunted, sailed and ice boated on Lake Butte Des Mort’s. He also worked on farms and delivered the newspaper for many years. He was a graduate of the one-room Slough Bridge School. Graduating from Oshkosh High School class of 1943, Paul was soon drafted, serving most of the next 2 years during WWII with the Mine Platoon, Antitank Co. of the 378th Regiment of 95th Infantry Division, seeing combat in the European operation until the war’s end in 1945. After the war he went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1950 from the University of Wisconsin Madison and later became a Professional Engineer. After graduating he went to work as a research engineer for Continental Can Co. starting in 1953 and for the majority of his working career he worked on the development of paper mill machinery, except for 6 years when he was an employee of FMC in Lakeland Florida, where he worked as an engineer in the citrus industry. Upon returning to Appleton in 1976, Paul became the Manager of Engineering at Appleton Machine Co. in Appleton and later at The Hewitt Machine Co. in Neenah WI., then retiring in 1994. He was an active member of TAPPI during his working years. Paul was always interested in Appleton civic affairs, holding the office of alderman from 1966-1968. Also interested in home building, through the years, he designed and built 3 of their own homes. In later years he was an active member in a computer group (SCUG) and in the computer group at Saint Vincent DePaul.
Paul was united in marriage to Jacqueline Gibbs on June 20, 1953 in Marquette MI. Jackie passed away in 2013 after celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
Paul is survived by daughters: Ann (William) Robisch, Mary (Alan) Blocher and Helen (Michael) Comperini; grandchildren: Mathew (Sara) Robisch and John Robisch and Sarah (Chris) Wells, great-grandchildren: Oliver, Wilhelm, Jebediah and Rachel Robisch and Cheyenne Radovcic.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife and his brother Jack (Phillis) Klemmer.
Family and friends are welcome to gather on Monday, December 4, 2023 at St. Thomas More Catholic Parish, 1810 N McDonald St., Appleton beginning at 10:00am until the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00am. Military honors to follow.
