Orland was born in Appleton, Wisconsin, on October 3, 1938, the oldest son of Adolph and Margaret (Gallow) Schmidt. He was born to eternal life at the age of 85 on January 22, 2024.
Orland married Sharon (Bellin) on August 7, 1965, at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. He worked many years at Consolidated Papers. In retirement, he spent 20 years working for Avis Rental Cars, where he not only enjoyed driving many different cars, but made some great friends with whom he gathered every morning at McDonald’s. However, no day was complete if he didn’t have time to read. He also loved reminiscing about his years on the family farm.
Orland is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sharon; his sister Elaine (Tom) Bartel, sister-in law Judy Schmidt, brother-in-law Duane (Judy) Bellin, friends and many nieces and nephews, his godchildren—Sherrie Kent, Steve Schmidt, Andrea Bartel, Dan Kuba, Laurie Slomski, and also special nephew Robert Gass.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters Audrey Meyer, Mary Ellen Schmidt, and his brother Wayne Schmidt; parents-in-law, Willard and Orel Bellin; brothers-in-law, Bill Meyer, Derrold Bellin, Dennis Bellin, Dave Kuba; sister-in-law Shelba Kuba.
Sharon would like to thank two very special people, friend Laurie W. and godson Dan K., who were with her every step of the way. Thank you to Pastor Jon Kuske and Pastor Phil Geiger for their visits, the staff of Carolina Assisted Living for the kindness and care shown to Orland, and to their neighbors for helping wherever possible.
Per Orland’s wishes, a private family funeral will be held at Valley Funeral Home, Appleton, with Pastor Jon Kuske officiating. A memorial fund is being established.
