Michael Spence Obituary

Michael C. Spence, age 71, passed away on Wednesday, July 22, 2026. He was born in North Carolina on July 7, 1955, to the late Thomas Spence and Charlotte (Scherf) Kiefer. Mike was united in marriage on March 7, 1980, to Lynn Leggett.

There are some people whose presence naturally brightens a room, and Mike was one of them. Known for his warm smile, bubbly personality, and genuine kindness, he lived a life centered on family, friendship, and serving others. He had an extraordinary ability to make everyone he met feel seen, appreciated, and important. Whether through a thoughtful compliment, an engaging conversation, or simply taking the time to listen, he left people feeling better than when he found them.

Above all, Mike cherished his family. They were the center of his world and the source of his greatest pride and joy. He treasured every opportunity to spend time together, creating memories that will be held close for generations to come.

An avid golfer, Mike found happiness on the golf course, where he enjoyed both the game and the camaraderie it brought. He believed life was meant to be shared, whether through a round of golf, a heartfelt conversation, or a simple act of kindness.

Mike’s dedication to his community reflected the generous spirit he carried throughout his life. He volunteered countless hours through the YMCA, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, and the Little Chute Learning Program, helping children develop a love for reading and learning. As both a Boy Scout in his youth and a dedicated Scout volunteer as an adult, he found great fulfillment in mentoring young people, encouraging them to grow into capable, compassionate individuals.

Though his family and friends will deeply miss his laughter, encouragement, and unwavering compassion, they find comfort in knowing that his legacy lives on in the countless lives he touched. His example reminds us that the greatest impact we can have is often found in the simplest gestures: a kind word, a listening ear, or making someone feel they truly matter.

Mike is survived by his wife of 46 years, Lynn Spence; children: Matthew (Cristi) Spence, Christina (Jason) Aniol; grandchildren: Katherine Spence, Meghan Spence, Codi Spence, Peyton Aniol; great-grandchildren: Kinsley Aniol, Malakai Spence; brother, Kenny Spence; and step-father, Paul Kiefer. He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Thomas and Elgie Spence, and mother, Charlotte Kiefer.
