Marilyn Mae Belau, age 80, passed away on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at Lakeland Regional Health Hospital in Lakeland, FL. She was born on May 29, 1945 in Columbus, WI to the late Ruben and Rose (Miller) Bickel. Marilyn was united in marriage on July 20, 1968 to Ronald Belau.
A devoted believer, she loved the Lord deeply and lived her faith through kindness, patience, and an ever-present sense of joy. Marilyn was known for her bubbly personality and warm smile which brightened a room the moment she entered it. She spent many years as a parochial school teacher, a role she was born for, shaping young minds with compassion, encouragement, and genuine love for learning. Marilyn was an avid reader, especially fond of cat mystery novels – because life is simply better with a good story and a clever feline. Above all, she adored cats, most especially her beloved companion, Muffy, who held a very special place in her heart. Marilyn spent her winters in Florida and spring and fall weekends at their cottage on Lake Minocqua.
Marilyn is survived by her husband, Ronald Belau; son, Brett (Jeanna) Belau; and grandson, Ethan Belau. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ruben and Rose Bickel and siblings, Rev. Elton (Donna Marie) Bickel and Caroline Bickel.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, January 23, 2026 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N Richmond Street, Appleton, with Pastor Scott Smith officiating. Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Friday from 10:30 am until the time of service. Marilyn will be laid to rest at Riverside Cemetery.
