A Life Well Lived
Gregory John Schiek Sr formerly of Conover, WI, passed away Saturday December 12, 2020. Born on September 24, 1950 in Milwaukee, WI to Louise and Norbert Schiek Sr., Gregory was one of nine siblings. He grew up in Milwaukee, WI where at a young age he began to develop a love for hunting, fishing and the great outdoors. In his teenage years, he helped out at the family resort, “Schiek’s Long Lake Resort” in Campbellsport, WI. Gregory then entered the Army Reserves and became a Drill Sergeant. Throughout his life, Gregory believed in hard work and valued education. His strong work ethic contributed to many unique work opportunities. He enjoyed working with people and believed in treating everyone with empathy. Gregory became a social worker and retired as the Director of Vilas County Social Services in 2010.
Gregory met the love of his life, Elaine (Kopp) in Kewaskum, WI. Prior to marrying, they bought a farm and raised beef cattle. Gregory attended the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, while raising a family and working the farm, earning his bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Gregory was always drawn to natural beauty and had a growing passion to live in the Northwoods. This resulted in Gregory, Elaine, and their three children taking a chance, and moving to Eagle River, WI where they continued to build their life together.
Gregory was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend to many. If you were lucky enough to have met him, your day was a little brighter. He believed in living every day to its fullest and could often be found “chattin’ it up” with everyone he met. Gregory was a great storyteller, with an infectious laugh, and a wealth of knowledge. He was an avid outdoorsman and believed that being outside in the natural beauty was the closest you could get to God.
Gregory leaves behind his wife Elaine Schiek of New London, his three children, Gregory (Wendy) Schiek Jr. of Abrams, Sarah (Corey) Schiek of Edgerton, and Laura (Aaron) Rapp of New London; six grandchildren, Gregory III, Ava, Isabella, Emma, Logan, and Sawyer; four brothers, Jack (Jane) Schiek of Greenfield, Joseph (Geri) Schiek of Fond du Lac, James (Peggy) Schiek of Waupaca, and Jerry Schiek of Franklin; two sisters, Mary Ries of Slinger, and Kathie (Harvey) Ramthun of Kewaskum; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
