Gene E. Niesen, age 86 of Appleton, passed away on January 15, 2024. He was born in Milwaukee to the late Richard and Dorothy (Paramenter) Niesen on September 2, 1937. Gene is a veteran, serving with the US navy. He worked for NASA at Cape Canaveral in Florida prior to moving back to Wisconsin. Gene worked for many years at AAL and later Thrivent Financial in the IT department. On October 12, 1985 he married Mary Strauss, she preceded him in death on January 22, 2009. Gene was a kind and down to earth gentleman. He enjoyed keeping his yard well manicured and loved automobiles, always wanting the nicest and the newest cars. He loved taking them on drives, usually Sunday’s, after church, he would just drive. Gene could end up at your house for a visit, or in another state, wherever the drive would take him. He loved his St. Peter church community-family and he was very committed to furthering the ministry.
He is survived by his children; Richard (Julie) Niesen, Glenn (Debra) Niesen and Virginia Hockemeyer, grandchildren; Dustin, Baylee, Matthew and Melissa and six great grandchildren. Gene is further survived by his sister, Judith Walsh, sisters in law, Ruth Niesen, Gail Moesch and Lynda (Doug) Hoffman, brother in law, Neil (Eileen) Strauss as well as many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death are his wife, Mary, parents, son in law, Eric Hockemeyer, brother Joel Niesen, sister Susan (Mick) Malmoa and brother in law, Jim Walsh.
Family and friends may gather on Sunday, January 21, 2024 beginning at 2:00pm at St. Peter Lutheran Church, N2740 French Rd., Freedom with a funeral service to follow at 3:00pm at the church. Inurnment will take place at Woodlawn Cemetery, Shawano in the spring. In lieu of flowers or other expressions of sympathy, memorials in Gene’s memory can be made to St. Peter Lutheran Church.
The family wishes to thank the staff and nurses of Rennes Nursing Home and Aseracare Hospice for the wonderful care given to Gene.
