Gary L. Gilkey, age 78, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 24, 2025. He was born on August 31, 1947, to the late Herbert Gilkey and Martha Atkins in Johnstown, PA.
Gary proudly served his country as a member of the US Navy from 1965 to 1967. On October 24th, 1973, he married the love of his life, Ruth, and together they raised three children. Gary had a passion for all things outdoors and loved to spend his time hunting, fishing, and playing golf. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed cheering on the Brewers and Packers. Gary also had a love for music and singing, especially country music. Above all else, Gary loved his family and they will forever cherish the many wonderful memories they made over the years, especially coaching his kids in their sporting events.
Gary is survived by his loving wife: Ruth Gilkey, Kaukauna; children: Tim (Shara) Gilkey, Ennis, TX, Maggie Gilkey, Kaukauna, and Mary (Dennis) Myers, Appleton; grandchildren: Molly (Evan) Eberhart, Jackson Gilkey, Jacob Myers, Clara Myers, and Audrey Myers; and a great granddaughter, Ophelia Eberhart. He is further survived by his siblings: Beverly (Larry) Conners, Judy (Joel) Cress, Debbie (Bill) Proviano-Griser; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Gary is preceded in death by his siblings: Ron Gilkey, Roberta Kelly, Kenneth W. Gochenour, Doug Gilkey; and his stepfather, Elmer Atkins.
A Funeral Mass for Gary will be held on October 2, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Parish, 404 W. Lawrence St., Appleton. Visitation will begin at the church at 9:00 a.m. and will continue until the time of the Mass. Gary will be laid to rest in Appleton’s Riverside Cemetery.
