Elizabeth was born on June 29, 1927 in Napoleon, North Dakota, to Anton and Frances Schmitt. Liz met Donald McCarthy in Fargo, North Dakota and quickly fell in love. They married on October 14, 1947 in Napoleon, North Dakota, later moving to Appleton, Wisconsin. Liz worked at Gimbels, Marshall Fields and Macy’s until her retirement. She enjoyed golf, playing cards, crochet, bowling and bridge. Long after Don’s passing, Liz met and married Roland Hopfensperger in 1993.
Liz had six brothers, Mike, Jake, William, Tony, Joseph, and Jerome and five sisters, Marion Bauer, Phyllis Priest, Helen Wambach, Angie Krumrai and Delores Schmitt. Angie Krumrai is Liz’s only surviving sibling. Liz’s children include; Cynthia (William) Nack, Sheila (special friend Jim) Schueler, Mary (Mark) Olson and Kelly (Sue) McCarthy, grandchildren; Aaron (Hillary) Nack, Jameson (Tania) Nack, Joel (Sarah) Nack, Kerri Schueler, Kenneth Schueler, Don (Natasha) McCarthy, Meggie (Alex) Page, Michael (Emily) Stolzman, Matthew (Jessie) Stolzman, extended family grandchildren; Nathan (Carla) Olson, Steve (Becky) Olson, Angela (Benjamin) Winter, Aaron (special friend Kerri), as well as the Hopfensperger and Hoersch families, including her special niece who was like Liz’s daughter, Lynn Stilson, great grandchildren; Kayla Wessley, Evie Mielke, Liam Nack, Rory Nack, Lachlan Nack, Dalton Nack, Caden Nack, Connor Nack, Molly Nack, Sam Stolzman, Avery Stolzman, Merett Stolzman, Brooke McCarthy, Eli McCarthy, Blakely Page, Kylee Page and great great grandchildren; Ellarie, Ethan and Emmet Wessley.
Preceding her in death were; Donald McCarthy, special grandchild Kyle McCarthy, and Roland Hopfensperger.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023 at St. Pius Catholic Church, 500 W. Marquette St., Appleton, with the visitation at the church from 10:00am to 11:30am, and the Mass to follow at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to St. Jude Children’s Hospital.
