Cyrus (Cy) Wurster passed away September 3, 2025 at the age of 89. Because his life was centered around the Bible verse “Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved” his new home is now heaven.
Cy was born in Wausau, Wisconsin to George and Alma Wurster in 1935. His early years were spent on the family farm where he milked cows by hand, drove horses, shocked oats in the field and filled up the woodshed for winter use. He attended Trinity Lutheran School in rural Wausau for his first eight grades. It was a one room school with as many as 30 kids, one teacher, a small oil stove and no indoor plumbing.
Upon graduation from Wausau High in 1954 he served three years in the U. S. Army, most of it in Japan.
Following his discharge, he went on to graduate from Spencerian College in Milwaukee where he was an honor student, president of his fraternity and graduation commencement speaker. It was there he met his wife, Nola, with whom he spent 65 years of life together.
His major employers were Standard Oil, AAL/Thrivent Financial and Outagamie County. His field was Human Resources where he served in various capacities. Cy did well in sports. He was a successful pitcher for the Wausau Lumberjack high school baseball team. In the Army he played shortstop on the championship softball team. And he once bowled a 3-game series of 738. His ping pong skills confounded his opponents in the Wurster basement.
Family was a big deal in Cy’s life, and he was fully devoted to it. He felt very blessed to have three sons, daughters-in-law and grandchildren who lived lives he was proud of. In 1972, being a big outdoors and up north guy, Cy and Nola bought some forested property near Mountain, Wisconsin. For the first 25 years a house trailer and bunkhouse served as the family retreat center. Then in 1996, following Cy’s retirement, the family undertook building a log sided cabin from scratch, everything from cutting down the trees to pounding the last nail. It's a source of great pride and serves as headquarters for hunting, fishing, biking, hiking, hosting friends, berry picking, campfires and making maple syrup.
Cy is survived by his wife and three sons, Barry (Maureen), Brian (Cris), Jeffrey (Trina), sister-in-law Pat Thompson, four grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Karissa, Kyle and two great grandchildren, Scottie and Charlie, and many nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Cy will be held on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, 601 E. Glendale Ave, Appleton. A time of visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. He will be laid to rest at Lake View Memorial Park with Military Honors taking place. Special thanks to the entire staff at Dimensions Living Appleton. When Nola was admitted into memory care in April 2024, a loving friendship full of laughter and fun was established between Cy and the staff. Although Cy only spent a short time in their care, they gave him attentive love and support, followed by a beautiful “walk out” after his passing that will stay with us forever.
