Charlene was born April 10, 1938 in Clinton, Iowa the daughter of Erwin and Mildred (Barber) Paulsen. She grew up in Davenport, IA and graduated from Davenport High in 1956. After a year of nurses training (Moline Lutheran) she decided she would rather be married and raise a family. She married Howard Porter on Valentine’s Day, 1958. Together they had three daughters: Theresa, Christine and Sara. Her other jobs included telephone operator, E. R. clerk and crisis phone responder. She was proud of her time as Volunteer in Probation (later VIOS). She worked at Gimbel’s, Macy’s and (her favorite) Piece by Piece. A talent for sewing which started in high school was expressed in making her daughters’ wedding dresses and her fascination with quilting. During warm weather she grew vegetables and hostas so she could play in the dirt. Meeting with Christi-Lu neighbors always put a smile on her face.
Charlene is survived by Howard, her daughters Theresa (Jon) Peterson and Christine Porter, grandchildren; Jacob (Amanda) Albrecht, Rachel Peterson and Kelly Peterson. Sister Ann Schaefer. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Ervin and daughter Sara.
