"Pinky"
Laura H. Atkinson Pinky 89, Appleton, passed away February 25, 2011 with family at her side. She was born February 5, 1922 in Darlington, WI, to Stephan and Laura (Taschek) Zenz. She was united in marriage to Leland Atkinson at Holy Rosary Church in Darlington on June 17, 1947. They were married 58 years. After high school Laura tried a few different jobs to find her way in the business world. She even moved to Chicago but found it not to her liking. She moved back to Darlington. So many were doing work for the war effort. Laura had a full time job at the dime store, pin welding at Burgess Battery for walkie talkies (4 hrs for war effort) and part time at the movie theater selling tickets, nights and weekends. In September of 1945 the war was over and the man who was to become her husband moved to Darlington. Lee worked for an insurance company and together they opened 3 branch offices in different cities before they ended up in Appleton. Laura became a stay at home mom as they had children. She had many interests. She was a member of the garden club, and became a prize winning floral arranger. Laura enjoyed painting ceramics and quilting at church with her friends. She also enjoyed spending time with her family, and had a way of looking at all the beauty around her. She loved the flowers, the sky, the bugs, the writings of other people, the rainbows, the animals, the cards she received, the reminiscent magazines, Christmas, sunny days, rainy days, to succeed at fixing things, but most of all when she could help and give pleasure to someone else.

Laura is survived by her three children: Hallie (Deborah), Appleton; Loralee (Dean) Kranzler, Salina, KS and Scott (Sue), Neenah; five grandchildren: Michael (Millie), Ryan (Ellie), Kody (Kathryn) Kramer and Anthony and Andrea Bonnin; three great grandchildren: Conner, Evan and Haily; two sisters: Rosie King, Mineral Point, WI and Betsy (Jim) Hayes, Pine Bluff, AK. Further survived by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Her family would like to give special thanks to the very caring staff at Appleton Medical Center and Rennes Health Care. You not only took very good care of Laura, and with dignity, you also helped the family with some very tough decisions. Thank you.

Condolences

Laura used the volunteer driver program at the Thompson Community center. I would talk with her frequently when she booked the rides. She was often very positive and cheerful. I have to admit I was surprised at her age, as she appeared to be younger. Great person! My sympathy to the family.
